Featured in collective Exhibition: Samkura: A Journey
State Museum of Contemporary Art Warehouse B1, Thessaloniki port, Greece
The exhibition “Samkura: a Journey” presents the works of artists from Armenia, Georgia, Greece, Ireland and Portugal, who participated in a programme of cultural exchanges which was initiated and organized by «Cló Ceardlann na gCnoc» and supported by the EACEA, the co-partners, Culture Ireland and Ealáin na Gaeltachta. This exhibition is a collaboration between the SMCA and Cló.
“Samkura” means shamrock or trefoil in Georgian and the name was given to this trans-European art and culture initiative, offering to the well known Irish symbol connotations of artistic creativity, exchange and mobility. Artists from the five countries put into practice the idea of a living exchange through the experience of working both individually and collaboratively to create the works for this central exhibition that will bring the two-year programme to a conclusion.
\\\\\\ Article Remix between DIY and aesthetics. Time-based work by André Gonçalves. By: Ana Carvalho
"The practices of re-combination and repetition of pre-existent material that we call remixing, nowadays detached from its musical roots, combined with other apropriative methods, and expanded to image, text and to the combinatory possibilities across all media, is defined, in generic terms, by the creative production based on the actions of cut, copy and paste[1].
Remix carries within itself values about intellectual property and ethics related to the exchange and sharing of content, experience and expertise. Remixing implies collecting, re-contextualizing by re-combining data and its meanings. In performance, the remixed combination becoms momentariry and ephemeral.
In this text I will trace a parallel between the actions of remixing content/data and actions of hacking technology (hardware) in a way that expresses recombination as a creative process that brings the new to existence. This text is part of a series of ongoing written exercises on live audiovisual performative practices at their intersection with other art practices and other areas of knowledge.
The aim of these exercises is to identify interdisicplinary points of intersection by reflecting on the connections artists establish through their work. With this in mind, each text analyses the work of an artist. Ultimatelly, the texts constitute a whole that evidence of the complex identity that describes live audiovisual performance. Departing from a dialogue with the Portuguese artist André Gonçalves, and through exploring elements implicit in his work, connections will be established between remix culture and hacking as activities of translation.[...]" continue readinghere
In Portugal, the urban population keeps growing year after year, in accordance to the world tendency for desertification of the rural space.
In the urban space, the pace is increasingly fast because time is money and every second counts.
USMA is a clock without a visual interface, resorting only to sound to mark the passage of time.
The sound of the church bell is the clock hand which intends to bring home the rural experience with the definite goal of giving a new rhythm to city life.
